Shopify app costs

The Shopify app and integration tax

Shopify apps and integrations can cost established merchants tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, on top of Shopify subscription and payment processing fees.

Not all of that spending is unnecessary. But many merchants rent functionality that could instead be part of their commerce infrastructure: ERP integrations, checkout rules, shipping logic, storefront features and customer workflows.

The range

How much do the apps actually add up to?

For brands generating $5M–$20M in annual revenue, industry estimates suggest total app and commerce technology spending of $60,000–$180,000 per year. Larger merchants spend considerably more.

Estimated annual spend, log scale

Illustrative 2026 industry estimates, not Shopify-wide averages. Includes third-party commerce technology services, not just Shopify App Store subscriptions. Revenue is not necessarily equal to GMV.

The important question is how much of this spending buys valuable external services, and how much pays for functionality merchants could own instead.

Where it goes

Which Shopify apps can be replaced?

Four categories carry most of the recurring spend. Each one maps to something the commerce engine can do directly.

Illustrative annual category expenditures for established merchants, not individual app prices or guaranteed savings. Merchants do not necessarily use every app in a category. Specialized functionality may still require external services.

The largest opportunities are typically middleware, checkout and shipping rules, and storefront extensions. These often charge recurring fees for functionality that can be implemented through native commerce capabilities, APIs and custom applications.

Saleor provides a GraphQL API, webhooks, native commerce functionality and an extensible architecture. Merchants can replace many rented apps with direct integrations and business-owned code.

Specialized services such as fraud protection, tax compliance, logistics and marketing automation may remain valuable regardless of platform.

Saleor Made-to-Measure

Pay for a working system, not development hours

Our engineers work directly with merchants to deliver the apps, integrations and extensions needed to go live. The delivered code belongs to the merchant rather than being tied to another recurring app subscription. How Made-to-Measure works

ERP and inventory

NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Business Central, Odoo and other business systems, connected through the API rather than a middleware subscription.

Fulfillment

Warehouse management systems, 3PLs, shipping providers and order automation, wired to the order lifecycle and its webhooks.

Commerce extensions

Custom shipping rules, pricing logic, promotions, checkout workflows and product options, built into the checkout instead of bolted onto it.

Operational tools

Dashboard extensions, background jobs and event-driven automation for the work that happens after the order is placed.

What the packages include

The Forward Deployed Engineering package includes one month of dedicated engineering for scoped apps, extensions, integrations and handover. We charge upfront for engineering and acceleration, then credit 100% of those fees against the Cloud subscription over the first year after go-live.

Both packages
$18,000upfront

Fully offset by $18,000 in Cloud subscription credits, equivalent to $1,500/month over 12 months. The included engineering therefore comes at no additional net cost beyond the Cloud subscription.

Fees are paid upfront and non-refundable. Credits begin after go-live. Saleor never charges for software development. Additional functionality can be built by your own developers or agency, with ongoing support from Saleor's engineering team.

The business model

Our incentives point the same way yours do

We make money when your store is live, running on Saleor and growing, not by charging more development hours. Our incentive is to deliver a working system, get it into production and support its long-term growth. Successful merchants become successful Saleor customers.

That is also why the app-cost conversation matters. A platform whose economics depend on your subscription renewing has a reason to make the system work. A stack of per-app subscriptions has a reason for every feature to live in its own bill.
